Roughrider Baseball Earns Mid-Week Sweep

2/9/2023 7:07:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College baseball team hosted Scottsdale Post Grad on a chilly Thursday afternoon at Roughrider Park and won both games of its home opener with final scores of 10-0 and 8-2, respectively. The sweep moves the Roughriders to 3-3 overall on the young season.

"I thought we played well," Head Coach Patrick Woods said after the wins. "Orr and Hargett controlled the tempo of each game, relievers did their jobs, we played good defense and hit. It was a good day of baseball. There is still a long way to go. Go Roughriders!"

Game One
Freshman righty Dillon Orr got the start on the mound in game one for YC and was exceptional. Orr tossed five shutout innings and allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out nine.

With Orr keeping the SPG bats at bay, the Roughriders stayed patient with their offensive approach, knowing just a couple of runs would be needed to take control of the contest and earn Orr the victory.

After stranding runners on base in the bottom of the first and second innings, YC broke through in the bottom of the third for a couple of runs, thanks to an RBI groundout from freshman infielder Quinn Allen and RBI double off the bat of sophomore outfielder Blake Jacklin

In the bottom of the fourth, YC ballooned its advantage to 5-0 after scoring on a passed ball, an opposite field RBI single off the bat of sophomore infielder Mitch Wood and RBI triple off the bat of Jacklin.

After SPG was unable to push any runs across in the top of the fifth, the Roughriders came to the plate in the bottom of the inning and ended the game in the blink of an eye. With two outs and two runners on base, the Roughriders were able to push five runs across to put the run rule into effect and end the seven-inning contest in just five innings.

Freshman catcher Wailele Kane-Yates started the merry-go-round with a two-run triple off the wall and later came around to score on an RBI double off the bat of sophomore infielder Ethan Thomas. The next two hitters (Allen and Wood) each tallied RBI singles to bring the game to its final of 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth on the run rule.

Jacklin led the Roughriders with three hits while Thomas, Wood and Kane-Yates all had two hits on the day. Allen and freshman infielder Pierce Radke each tallied one hit apiece as well.

Game Two
In the bottom of the first inning of game two, the first two Roughriders were retired, however, from there it was disaster for SPG as an error, a single from Thomas and another error gave YC a quick 1-0 lead.

After an infield single off the Wood loaded the bases with two outs, Jacklin made SPG pay for the sloppy defense in a big way as he roped a three-run double to right field to give YC a 4-0 advantage.

The quick run support was all sophomore righty Hunter Hargett needed as he settled in nicely in game two and finished with five innings pitched, no earned runs allowed, three hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

With an early lead and Hargett settled in, the Roughriders cruised the rest of the way in game two and added individual runs in the second and third innings (thanks to some sloppy SPG defense) and two runs in the seventh on an RBI double from Thomas and passed ball.

SPG was able to push across a couple of unearned runs in the top of the fifth, however, the Roughrider bullpen held its bats scoreless to close out the contest at the aforementioned final of 8-2.

Out of the pen, freshman righty Loreto Siniscalchi logged a couple of scoreless innings with a strikeout and was followed by a scoreless inning from sophomore righty Tommy Groom who struck out one. Fellow sophomore righty Zach Hose closed out the contest with three strikeouts in the ninth.

Thomas tallied another multi-hit game in game two while Jacklin, Wood and freshman outfielder Nolan Sparks each had one hit apiece.
