PRESCOTT, Ariz. – It was another windy one on Saturday afternoon at Bill Vallely Field where the Yavapai College softball team swept the Glendale Community College Gauchos, winning game one 10-5 and staging a dramatic comeback in the final inning of game two to win 15-14 and clinch the sweep. 

"I am very proud of the girls," Head Coach Kali Pugh said after the game. "They don't give up easily and that showed in today's games. They amaze me everyday."

The Roughriders have now won four in a row and sit at fifth in the ACCAC standings with a conference record of 10-4 while holding an overall record of 10-11. 

Game One
Sophomore infielder Torie Au tripled home a run in the bottom of the first in game one and later scored on an RBI single from freshman infielder Hayden McGuire to give the Roughriders an early 2-0 lead to start the day. 

In the bottom of the second, freshman outfielder Emmersyn Villa doubled home a run to bring the score to 3-0, however, Glendale plated the next two runs in the top of the fourth to make it a one-run ballgame. 

In the bottom of the fifth, YC extended its lead once more with a steal of home from Au, RBI single from sophomore catcher Brina Lankford and two-run single from freshman infielder Charley Pitrat to go up 7-2. 

The Gauchos, however, were relentless and pushed three runs across the plate in the top of the sixth to cut their deficit to just two at 7-5. 

YC responded with a three-spot of its own in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double from McGuire and two-run homer from sophomore catcher Amanda Pay, her second longball of the year.

With a 10-5 lead, freshman pitcher Samara Romero went out for the seventh and finished what she started with a 1-2-3 inning to secure the victory. Romero went the distance and gave up just two earned runs while striking out seven. 

At the plate, McGuire and fellow freshman infielder Brianna Baca led the charge with three hits apiece while Au, Pay and sophomore outfielder Meghan Kelly each had two. Villa, Lankford, Pitrat and freshman outfielder Ivannya Perez all finished with one. 

Game Two
Despite scoring first in the bottom of the first in game two on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Au, YC fell into a big hole as the Gauchos scored eight runs in the top of the second to take a commanding lead early in the slugfest. 

Down by seven, the Roughriders began to chip away and it began right away in the bottom of the second when Kelly launched a solo homer, her fourth of the season, and Baca doubled home a run to cut the deficit to 8-3. 

After Glendale went 1-2-3 in the third, YC scored twice more in the bottom of the frame on a RBI bunt from McGuire and bases-loaded Walk from Perez to cut the deficit to 8-5. 

In the fourth, Glendale scored a pair of runs on a two-run homer while the Roughriders stranded the bases loaded with no outs and trailed 10-5 heading to the fifth. 

The Gauchos launched another two-run homer in the top of the fifth, however, YC would get those runs back in the form of a two-run double off the bat of Au to bring the score to 12-7 in favor of Glendale. 

Down by five and entering the final two innings of play, the Roughriders set themselves up for a comeback with a scoreless top of the sixth and three-run bottom of the sixth after a two-run single from Baca and bases-loaded walk from Au. 

Entering the seventh with their smallest deficit since losing the lead, the Roughriders saw Glendale launch another two-run homer, their third of the game and fourth overall, giving them a four-run lead while needing just three outs to put the Roughriders away. 

YC had other plans, however, and scored two runs after a couple of singles and a couple of errors during the first three hitters of the inning. After a strikeout, Perez stepped up to the plate with the tying run on base and promptly delivered a game-tying homer to center, her third longball of the season, to bring the scoreboard reading to 14-14. 

The next batter, Baca, walked and headed to first base as the winning run. After Baca, Villa stepped up to the plate and sent the Roughriders into a frenzy as she roped a ball to right-center, scored Baca and clinched a 15-14 victory and sweep with a walkoff double. 

At the plate, Baca and Kelly each tallied three hits while Villa, Au, McGuire and Pitrat all had two apiece. Pay, Perez and sophomore infielder Maritza Celaya each finished with one hit in game two.

The Roughriders are back in action on Tuesday, April 2, in Yuma, Arizona, where they will take on the Arizona Western College Matadors with game one of the doubleheader set for an 11 a.m. start.
