Roughrider Baseball Stays Hot, Sweeps Scottsdale At Home

4/8/2023 8:22:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College baseball team played six games at home this week and emerged victorious in all six matchups, the most recent being a doubleheader sweep of the Scottsdale Community College Fighting Artichokes on Saturday afternoon at Roughrider Park with scores of 8-0 and 9-1, respectively.

"The pitching staff was great all day," Head Coach Patrick Woods said. "The offense also continues to barrel the ball and we are just trying to complete our small goals one at a time."

Overall, the Roughriders have won 12 of their last 14 games and are 24-13 on the season with a 17-9 mark in ACCAC contests as they continue to push for a region playoff spot.

Game One
Sophomore righty Hunter Hargett was the story for the Roughriders in game one. Hargett got the start on the mound and earned his fourth victory of the season with a dominant performance. The sophomore tossed a complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts and just three hits and three walks allowed.

With Hargett dominating on the mound, the Roughrider offense went to work right away as sophomore infielder Ethan Thomas doubled in a run in the first and was followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of fellow sophomore infielder Mitch Wood

Later in the inning, Thomas stole home while sophomore outfielder Jude Hall stole second base and the Roughriders led 3-0 after one.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Roughriders put together another three-run inning with a solo homer off the bat of Hall (his second of the season), hit-and-run RBI single off the bat of freshman infielder Pierce Radke and RBI single off the bat of freshman outfielder Nolan Sparks

Wood would then circle the bases for a run in the bottom of the fifth and single in a run with the bases loaded in the sixth to bring the game to its eventual final score of 8-0.

Sparks and Wood each tallied two hits in the contest while Thomas, Hall, Radke, freshman infielder Niko Rosell and freshman outfielder Danny Schweitzer each finished with one.

Game Two
Jackson Lapiner (three innings), Kansai Sugimoto (one inning), Kaden Schiefelbein (two innings), Loreto Siniscalchi (two innings) and Zach Hose (one inning) combined to allow just one run to the Fighting Artichokes in game two.

With another great pitching performance in full swing, the Roughrider bats got going later in the second game of the afternoon.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Hall singled home two runs to give YC a 2-1 lead and one it would not surrender for the remainder of the afternoon.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Roughriders put the contest away with a six-spot, starting with a solo homer off the bat of Thomas, his eighth longball of the season. Later in the frame, sophomore utility man Barrett Skaugrud singled in a run, sophomore outfielder Blake Jacklin singled in a run, Sparks singled in a run, YC scored on a passed ball and Rosell tallied the final RBI single of the frame to make it an 8-1 ballgame.

The next inning, Hall launched his second solo homer of the day, and third longball this season, to bring the game to its eventual final score of 9-1.

Jacklin led the way in game two with three hits while Rosell, Thomas and Hall each had two. Sparks, Wood, Skaugrud, Radke and freshman catcher Avery Isola each had one apiece in game two.
