Roughriders Race Past Coyotes, Remain Unbeaten in Conference

2/22/2022 6:12:00 PM

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The No. 5-ranked Yavapai College softball team headed down to the valley on Tuesday afternoon and collected a pair of ACCAC victories, defeating the Chandler Gilbert Coyotes (the last unbeaten team in conference play other than YC) 22-2 in game one and 12-0 in game two.

Yavapai moves to 18-1 overall, 10-0 in the conference and keeps its 17-game run-rule streak alive.

Game One
Coming off back-to-back ACCAC Pitcher of the Week awards, sophomore pitcher Emily Dix started game one for the Roughriders and was brilliant as usual. Dix tossed five innings, struck out seven and allowed just one earned run en route to her seventh-consecutive victory.

Offensively, the Yavapai offense continued to be a juggernaut in game one, scoring multiple runs in all five offensive innings (two, eight, three, three and six, respectively) and tallying 24 hits, including six doubles, one triple and six homers.

Freshman infielder Yaya Kaaialii (two homers, a triple, a double and six RBIs), sophomore infielder Cheyenne Sandoval (homer) and sophomore outfielder Alyssa Rosales (two homers and a double) all finished game one with four hits.

Freshman catcher Jasmine Moreno (homer and double) collected three hits while sophomore outfielders Mia Weckel (double) and Kayla Rodgers and freshman infielders Lovey Kepa'a and Makena Riggs (double) each had two. Freshman catcher Ashley Fields' tallied one hit in game one with a two-run double.

Game Two
Freshman pitchers Emily Darwin and Abby Cruz split time inside the circle in game two with Darwin getting the start and throwing three scoreless innings with four strikeouts. Cruz took over for the final two innings and didn't allow a run.

At the plate, Kaaialii led game two's charge with a perfect 3-for-3 effort that included a homer, double and three RBIs. Moreno, Weckel, Rodgers and Kepa'a all finished game two with two hits with Moreno homering and Kepa'a, Rodgers and Weckel all doubling. Riggs added a double to the effort and Rosales notched a hit as well.
