Yavapai Baseball Splits 2-Game Series with South Mountain

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Earlier today, the Yavapai Baseball team had two home games vs. the visiting Cougars of South Mountain. In two games, Yavapai went 1-1 against the visitors, losing the first and winning the second.

Game 1

The first game started at noon, and the Roughriders lost the close battle 13-14. 

Out of the 13 runs, 2 of them were scored by each player: AJ Diaz, Caleb Horsey, Liam Richards, and Justin Cherrington. Other runs were run in by Matthew Peterson, Kevin Ramos, Nathan Nichols, Dalton Irwin, and Derek Kiepke. These runs were batted in by Cherrington (4), Ramos (2), Nichols (2), Richards (2), Peterson, and Jackson Schofield.

Liam Richards stole 3 bases in this game.

Starting pitcher Kyle Lockridge had 3 strikeouts against 9 batters faced. Griffen Clapp and Austin Kalsek each had one as well.

Derek Kiepke and Justin Cherrington each had 6 putouts, while Kevin Ramos had 3 assists. Double plays were made by Ramos and Matthew Peterson, and Kiepke caught a runner stealing.

Game 2

The final game of the day was not as close, as Yavapai would take home a win, beating South Mountain 11-5.

Once again, many runs were scored by Yavapai in this game, and those who ran them in include Carson Feddema (2), Kevin Ramos (2), Nathan Nichols (2), Justin Cherrington (2), Reid Hurtt, Matthew Peterson, and Caleb Horsey. Nichols and Ramos batted in 3 of those runs each, while the rest came from Hurtt, Peterson, and Feddema. 

Nichols had two doubles in this game, and Justin Cherrington stole a base.

Shane Hooper had 4 strikeouts in just 2 innings, while Ty Thompson and Owen Fernandes each had 2. 

Justin Cherrington had 7 putouts, while Lucas Franz had 6. Matthew Peterson had 6 assists.

UP NEXT

This Saturday and Sunday, the guys play against Cochise at home, a team that has received votes in the weekly national ranking. Game 1 will take place on Saturday, March 8th, at 2 PM. Games 2 and 3 will come in the form of a double-header on Sunday, March 9th, at 12 and 2:30 PM.
