5/7/2023 2:40:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College softball team hosted the GateWay Community College Geckos at Bill Vallely Field on Saturday afternoon for its season finale and emerged with a sweep, winning game one 12-9 and game two 14-2.

Game One
The Geckos grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first in game one, however, freshman infielder Darby Kramp launched a two-run homer in the bottom half of the frame to regain the lead.

After a scoreless second inning from both teams, GateWay took a commanding 9-2 lead with a run in the third, six in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth down seven, the Roughrider bats matched their deficit in the frame to tie the ballgame, starting with an RBI single off the bat of sophomore utility player Genavie Espinoza

The next batter, freshman catcher Amanda Pay, doubled in two runs and was followed by another two-run double off the bat of freshman infielder Aly Savage to cut the deficit to 9-7. Four batters later, freshman infielder Torie Au hit the third two-run double of the inning to tie things up at 9-9.

In the sixth, the Geckos would go scoreless in the top half, setting the stage for the Roughriders to complete the comeback in the bottom half of the frame.

The Roughriders did just that as the first two batters of the inning reached base, before Pay launched a go-ahead three-run homer to give the Roughriders their second lead of the day at 12-9.

In the top of the seventh, freshman pitcher Abbie Bean recorded a zero to clinch the victory and complete the comeback.

At the plate, Au and Espinoza each tallied three hits while Pay, Savage and freshman infielder Maritza Celaya each had two. Kramp and freshman outfielder Chesnea Larimore each finished with one hit.

Game Two
The second contest of the day was drama free as Espinoza pitched a gem to lead the Roughriders to a 14-2 five-inning run-rule victory. Espinoza tossed all five innings and allowed just two runs on four hits while striking out six.

With Espinoza holding the Gecko bats in check, the offense went to work and broke through with six-spots in the second and third innings.

In the second, Kramp led off with a homer and was followed by RBI singles from freshman catcher Brina Lankford and sophomore outfielder Sydney Jones. Three batters after Jones, freshman outfielder Meghan Kelly drove in three with a triple to complete the six-run inning.

In the third, Pay doubled in a run, Lankford singled in a run, Au singled in a run and Kelly put an exclamation mark on the inning with a three-run homer to put the contest out of reach at 12-0 in favor of YC.

In the bottom of the fourth, Pay doubled in another run and Jones singled in another run to complete the scoring for the Roughriders while the Geckos scored once in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to bring the score to its final of 14-2.

Pay and Celaya led the way with three hits apiece in game two while Kelly (six RBI's), Espinoza, Lankford and Jones each had two. Au and Kramp each had one hit apiece in the contest.
