Baseball Bashes Eastern Arizona in Doubleheader Sweep

4/25/2023 7:10:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Roughriders brought the bats to the yard on Tuesday afternoon as the Yavapai College baseball team swept the Eastern Arizona College Gila Monsters at home with final scores of 8-5 and 20-10, respectively. The sweep pushes the Roughriders overall record to 28-19 and conference record to 21-15.

Game One
After watching the Gila Monsters score three unearned runs in the top of the first in game one, the Roughriders loaded the bases in the bottom of the first for sophomore infielder Ethan Thomas who promptly delivered a two-run single to right to cut the deficit to 3-2.

One inning later, freshman catcher Wailele Kane-Yates launched a two-run homer, his eighth of the season, to give YC a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the fourth, EAC pushed a run across to tie the contest at 4-4, however, YC got the run back right away in the bottom of the fourth thanks to some sloppy defense from the Gila Monsters.

Leading 5-4, the Roughriders extended their lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore outfielder Jude Hall hit a monster two-run homer over the right center wall. The tape measure shot was Hall's seventh of the season.

In the top of the sixth, EAC launched a solo homer to cut the deficit to 7-5, however, once more, YC would get that run back immediately in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single off the bat of Thomas.

Heading into the final frame of game one with an 8-5 lead, sophomore righty Zach Hose pitched a scoreless seventh to clinch the win and lock down his fifth save of the season.

Hose came on to relieve game one's starter, freshman righty Dillon Orr, who gutted through six innings while giving up five runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. The victory is Orr's seventh of the season.

At the plate, Thomas led the way with two hits while freshman outfielder Nolan Sparks, Kane-Yates, Hall, freshman infielder Pierce Radke and freshman outfielder Zachary Dando each had one.

Game Two
30 runs crossed the plate in the second ballgame of the day as the Roughriders earned a 20-10 run-rule victory in eight innings with 20 hits, 12 of which went for extra bases.

In the first, EAC scored twice to start things off, however, YC scored four times to take the lead for good. In the bottom of the fourth, the Roughriders seemingly put the contest away with a nine-spot, however, the 13-2 lead vanished in a hurry as the Gila Monsters scored four times in the fifth and sixth innings to cut their deficit to just 13-10.

From there, YC added one in the sixth and six in the eighth to bring the contest to a close.

At the plate, in game two, sophomore outfielder Blake Jacklin led the way with four hits, two of which were doubles. Hall (double, triple and homer) and freshman infielder Quinn Allen (double) each finished with three hits.

Sparks (triple), Thomas (homer), sophomore infielder Mitch Wood (triple) and Radke (homer and double) all had two hits while Kane-Yates and freshman catcher Avery Isola (homer) each finished with one hit.

On the mound, freshman righty Loreto Siniscalchi logged two scoreless innings of relief.
