Roughrider Women’s Basketball Takes Down No. 22 Cochise

2/8/2023 9:27:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Walraven Gymnasium featured an upset on Wednesday night as the Yavapai College women's basketball team took down the No. 22-ranked Cochise College Apaches 73-66.

"I'm so proud of our kids for playing hard, despite all the hurdles that they have had to jump through this season," Head Coach Gerrard Carmichael said. "They continue to work hard and they deserved this win."

The victory snaps YC's four-game losing streak and moves its overall record to 8-14 and conference record to 5-11. The Apaches remain in second place in the conference and fall to 20-4 overall and 13-3 in conference outings.

It certainly wasn't the start the Roughriders were looking for as Cochise jumped out to an 18-8 lead with just a couple of minutes left in the first quarter. Freshman guard Wynter Huskie and freshman forward Kishyah Anderson responded to the deficit with three pointers, respectively, on the next two YC possessions and the Roughriders trailed just 20-14 after one quarter.

The quarter break did not stop the hot YC shooting, however, it was time for freshman guard Saydee Allred to shine from long distance. To open up the second quarter, Allred hit three-consecutive threes to give the Roughriders a 23-22 lead with five minutes left to play, erasing what was a 10-point deficit and turning it into a one-point lead.

The Apaches and Roughriders went back-and-forth throughout the rest of the half and eventually headed to their respective locker rooms tied at 33-33.

Once more, a pause in action did nothing to deter the Roughriders shots from long range as Allred opened up the half with a three pointer while getting fouled. The freshman swished her free throw attempt and YC led 37-33 out of the gate.

After Allred's four-point play, four more Roughriders scored baskets in the third quarter and YC ended the period with a 50-46 lead and sat just 10 minutes away from its biggest win of the season.

Intent on closing out the Apaches, freshman guard Brooklyn Wiltbank buried her second three of the game to start the fourth and was followed by a jump shot from freshman guard Hollie Dalton, giving the Roughriders a commanding 55-46 lead.

Cochise never blinked, however, and was able to cut the Roughrider lead to just 61-59 with two and a half minutes left to play in regulation.

With the game hinging on the next basket, the aforementioned Dalton dribbled around a screen and buried a long jumper to give the Roughriders a four-point cushion with time running out.

Despite the Apaches scoring once more, freshman center Chloe Lobmeyer and Anderson each scored, respectively, on the next YC possessions and the Roughriders were able to close the game out with free throws and emerged victorious with a 73-66 final.

Anderson led all YC scorers with 22 points while Allred had 17 and Wiltbank had 10.
