Carmichael joined the Roughriders in January of 2022 and enters his second season of coaching Yavapai in 2023-24.
In Carmichael's first season at YC in 2022-23, the Roughriders went 11-17 overall and 8-14 in the ACCAC. During the season, Kishyah Anderson earned NJCAA Player of the Week and ACCAC Player of the Week honors on December 14, 2022. After the season, Anderson earned Second-Team All-Conference and Second-Team All-Region honors. Â
Carmichael comes to Yavapai from Glendale, Arizona, where he most recently served as the Head Coach of the Dime Academy Basketball Club (U15 and U16 men's basketball), starting in May of 2017. In addition to coaching, he specialized in recruiting and fundraising with Dime Academy.Â
From 2004-17, Carmichael was a High School Varsity Women's Basketball Head Coach: coaching at Shadow Mountain from 2004-11 and Horizon from 2011-17.Â
While at Horizon, Carmichael led his squad to a Region Championship in 2017 (the first one in school history since 1984), No. 3 state ranking in 2017 and saw his team finish in the top-eight from 2015-17.Â
During his time at Shadow Mountain, his squad made the playoffs from 2006-08, finished in the final four in 2009, won a State Championship in 2010 (the first in school history) and earned state runner-up honors in 2011. From 2009-11, the Matadors ranked No. 1 in the state.Â
Prior to his time at Shadow Mountain, Carmichael spent one season as an Assistant Coach for the Matadors varsity men's basketball team and helped guide them to a state title in 2000.Â
From 2000-2011 (and while coaching at Shadow Mountain), Carmichael also held the title of Director of Recruiting/Operations for the Team Bibby Basketball Club, coaching U17 men's basketball while seeing 85% of his players go on to play at the DI, DII and JUCO levels.Â
Other coaching positions that Carmichael has held include Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at Utah Valley State College from June of 1994 to May of 1998 and Pepperdine University from November of 1993 to April of 1994.Â
Carmichael's playing days in college spanned from 1982-84 when he played at Feather River Community College from 1982-83 and Scottsdale Community College from 1983-84. While at Feather River, his squad placed second in the region and while at Scottsdale, he served as the team captain and starting point guard while leading his team in assists and steals.Â
In high school, Carmichael played at Shadow Mountain and earned North Valley Player of the Year honors in 1982 in addition to All-State honors in football and basketball.
He earned his master's degree in business leadership from Grand Canyon University in 2015 and bachelor's degree in health/business integrated studies from Utah Valley State College in 2000.Â
Carmichael and his wife (Barbie) have four children.Â
