Baseball Sweeps Scottsdale Post Grad

4/8/2022 10:23:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College baseball team welcomed Scottsdale Post Grad to Roughrider Park on Friday afternoon and left the ballpark with a sweep, winning 4-0 in game one and 10-6 in game two. The pair of victories pushed the Roughriders' record to 29-12-1 overall with a 17-9 mark in conference action.

Game One
Freshman utility man Barrett Skaugrud started on the mound in game one and was stellar. Skaugrud pitched six scoreless innings, struck out 11 hitters and allowed just three hits.

Freshman lefty Justin Hanson came in after Skaugrud and notched an inning of scoreless relief with two strikeouts to secure the 4-0 win.

Offensively, Yavapai scored twice in the first on a two-run homer off the bat of redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sean Rimmer, once in the second on a wild pitch and once in the sixth on an RBI double off the bat of freshman infielder Alex Ulloa

At the plate, Rimmer, Ulloa and sophomore infielder JT Taylor (first-inning double) were the only Roughriders to hit safely in game one.

Game Two
In game two, the Roughriders played from behind early and had to tame the Scottsdale bats after an early slugfest.

Down 2-0, YC took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run double from Rimmer and an RBI single from sophomore utility man Jo Stevens

Scottsdale, however, responded with a four-spot in the top of the fourth to take back the lead. Down 6-3 now, YC once again responded with a four-spot of their own in the bottom of the fourth to take back their one-run lead.

In the inning, sophomore infielder Travis Warinner brought home a run with an RBI single, Taylor had a bases loaded walk and the Roughriders scored twice more on passed balls.

Yavapai would not surrender the lead the rest of the afternoon and added an insurance run in fifth on a Scottsdale error and two in the sixth on an RBI single from freshman infielder Rocco Gump and bases loaded walk from redshirt-freshman outfielder Jack Nehls

On the mound, redshirt-sophomore lefty Cal Lambert, sophomore righty Ben Staiger and freshman righty Cayden Collins all logged scoreless innings of relief. Each struck out two except for Lambert who struck out three.

At the plate, Taylor and Stevens each had two hits while Warinner, Rimmer, Gump, Ulloa, sophomore infielder Kade York and freshman catcher Cade Westerlund each had one.
