PRESCOTT, Ariz. (August 30, 2025)
The Yavapai Volleyball team just had their match against Westcliff University out of Irvine, California, and Yavapai would end up taking the W in their first home win of the season! Yavapai beat Westcliff 3-2.
The first set was a Yavapai loss, with Westcliff winning 25-18. The Roughriders had some big plays in the first set, with
Anouk van Kollenburg leading the charge with 3 major spikes! Other offensive plays came from
Aubrey Parris and nice serves from
Maria Clara Gadelha Cruz, and great blocks came from
Destiny Matthews.
Yavapai won the second set 25-21, and the charge was led by
Aubrey Parris and Micah Garnder, who each had multiple big spikes down the stretch! Defensive reinforcements came in from
Skylar Schwartz, Matthews, and Gardner, allowing Yavapai to tie the match 1-1.
The third set was a close back and forth between Yavapai and Westcliff, but the Roughriders would fall 22-25 in the closing seconds.
Valerie Sabalza and
Mariah Leyva had great service aces, and Hédi Mayerhoffer provided excellent defensive plays at the net.
Destiny Matthews had a few HUGE spikes to keep Yavapai in the game, but Westcliff would take the lead 2-1.
Yavapai ties it 2-2! Starting off the set with big spikes from
Skylar Schwartz and keeping a consistent lead with defense from Mayerhoffer and Gardner led the Roughriders to tie the match and win this set 25-17.
In the final set of the day,
Morgane Breault had an ace to set the tone, and with big spikes from Parris and "Spikah" Gardner, Yavapai won the set 15-5, winning the whole match 3-2!
UP NEXT
Yavapai Volleyball will resume play next Friday and Saturday at home at the Yavapai College Volleyball Invitational! They are set to play Phoenix College at 1 PM on Friday, as well as Midland College at 5 PM. The next day, September 6th, they play Colorado Northwestern CC at 11 AM.
