Women’s Soccer Completes Comeback Against No. 15 Pima

9/9/2023 11:23:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – A lightning delay to start the day and an early deficit weren't enough to down the Roughriders on Saturday afternoon at Ken Lindley Field as YC scored two late goals to defeat the No. 15-ranked Pima Community College Aztecs 2-1, moving its overall record to 3-4 and conference record to 1-1.

It is the third victory in program history over a ranked opponent and, coincidentally, all three have come over Pima. Today's victory also gives YC the season sweep over the Aztecs as the Roughriders defeated Pima on the road earlier in the season by a score of 2-1 as well when the Aztecs were ranked No. 5.

In the all-time series against Pima, the Roughriders are now 3-3.

"We had a slow start," Head Coach Rozie DeWeese said after the game. "Our energy and confidence, however, were much improved in the second half. We won more individual battles and were able to apply pressure higher up the field. It was a great team effort for a much-needed conference win."

Pima wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Saturday as it found pay dirt three minutes into the contest and led 1-0 at halftime after a first half with few scoring chances from both teams.

In fact, it seemed as if the contest was destined to end in a 1-0 score for much of the second half as well, until freshman forward Paola Carrillo lined up for a free kick on the Aztec side of the field with 25 minutes left to play.

Carrillo's kick split the defense and found the body of sophomore forward Julie Reyes who corralled the ball, spun and shot it past the Aztec goalkeeper to tie the match up at 1-1.

The game-tying goal (Reyes' third goal of the season) was the confidence boost the Roughriders needed and they began to push the ball up the field and dictate the terms of the match.

The aggressive play paid off with just under five minutes left to go in the match as YC was applying heavy pressure in their offensive zone. That's when freshman forward Jayla Colbert gained possession of the ball, outran her defender and crossed the ball in front of the Aztec net.

Fellow freshman forward Ciara Webbe saw the cross pass and timed the play perfectly as she leapt and tapped the ball out of the air just ahead of the Pima goalkeeper to find the back of the net and give YC its first lead of the day at 2-1.

Webbe's third goal of the season stood as the game-winner as YC was able to hold Pima off the scoresheet for the remainder of the match to clinch the 2-1 victory.

While Reyes and Webbe collected their third goals of the season, Carrillo collected her second assist and Colbert collected her first. In goal, freshman goalkeeper LJ Hempel collected her third win of the season and notched two saves.
