Women’s Soccer Runs Win Streak To Four In Chandler

9/19/2023 9:37:00 PM

CHANDLER, Ariz. – The Yavapai College women's soccer team took its show on the road on Tuesday afternoon against the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Coyotes and is headed back to Prescott with a 4-0 victory.

The victory pushes the Roughriders' win streak to four, shutout streak to three, overall record to 6-4 and conference record to 4-1.

"We put together a solid effort in implementing our game plan for the full 90 minutes today," Head Coach Rozie DeWeese said after the win. "Our possession play in the attacking third was the most sharp we've been this season. Our goalkeeping and back line were also outstanding in securing another important shutout."

20 minutes into the contest, the Roughriders found themselves on a 2-on-1 rush in which freshman forward Paola Carrillo distributed a perfect pass to fellow freshman forward Ciara Webbe who beat the Coyote goalkeeper to her right to tally her fourth goal of the season.

Five minutes later, Carrillo was at it again. This time, she evaded several Coyote defenders, spun and played a ball to sophomore forward Julie Reyes who sniped home her ninth goal of the season to the short side of the Chandler-Gilbert net.

The pair of assists from Carrillo also elevated her season total to four, tying her for the team lead with Reyes.

With two minutes left to play in the first half, a scramble in front of the net led to another Roughrider scoring opportunity and freshman defender Rylee Kunker took advantage, blasting a shot on goal and watching it ricochet in off a deflection to give YC a 3-0 lead while scoring her first goal of the season.

After halftime, the Roughriders scored their final goal of the afternoon just a couple of minutes after the second half water break.

With just under 20 to play, sophomore midfielder Cami Prieto feathered a pass through the Coyote defense and found the foot of Reyes who sprinted towards the net and beat the Coyote keeper to her left for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Prieto's assist also gives her four on the season, tying her for the team lead with Reyes and Carrillo.

Reyes' 10th goal of the season makes her just the second Roughrider in program history to tally double-digit goals in a season and she is one goal away from tying the program's single-season record held by Emma Alvarez who accomplished the feat during the 2021 season.

In goal for YC, freshman goalkeepers LJ Hempel (80 minutes) and Yadxiry Navarrete (10 minutes) earned the shutout.
