Roughrider Women’s Soccer Opens 2023 Season With Victory Over CSN

8/18/2023 12:11:00 AM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – A rainy day at Ken Lindley Field on Thursday afternoon was not enough to stop the Yavapai College women's soccer team as it defeated the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 4-2 in its home/season opener to move to 1-0 on the young season and 3-0 in the all-time series against the Coyotes.

"That's a great way to start our season," Head Coach Rozie DeWeese said after the game. "I'm really proud of our overall team effort and energy on both sides of the ball and from our sideline. We created a lot of good chances and scored some nice goals. I loved that we battled til the end and found a way to secure the win!"

The Roughriders wasted no time in notching their first goal of the season as 10 minutes into the contest, freshman defender Dylan Ramirez lined up for a free kick and sent it straight down the middle on the CSN side of the field.

Before the goalkeeper had a chance to come out and make a play, freshman forward Ciara Webbe touched the ball past her and saw it hit the back of the net to give YC a 1-0 lead.

Despite dominating the time of possession after the goal, the Roughriders saw CSN take advantage of a loose rebound, just before the first-half water break, and put the ball in the back of the net to tie things up at 1-1.

Five minutes later, sophomore forward Emma Young took the lead right back with an impressive goal. Young corralled a throw-in, pushed past two CSN defenders and fired a rocket to the short side of the goal to give YC a 2-1 advantage.

The Roughriders would take that lead into the break, however, starting goalkeeper freshman LJ Hempel made a stellar save with just under two minutes left to play in the half to keep that lead. With heavy traffic in front of the net, Hempel stopped a free kick on goal and was able to prevent a rebound opportunity, despite finding herself flat on the ground.

Hempel wound up making six total saves in the game and came away with the victory in net.

After the half, the action was limited until the final minutes of the game. Unfortunately for the Roughriders, the Coyotes got in on the fun with 12 minutes to go by tying the game at 2-2 with a penalty kick.

Four minutes later, sophomore forward Julie Reyes returned the favor right back to the Coyotes with a penalty-kick goal of her own to give the Roughriders their third one-goal lead of the game.

The frenzy continued into the last three minutes of the game as the Coyotes nearly tied things with a shot that hit the post and a cross pass in front of the Roughrider net that couldn't quite turn into a scoring opportunity.

With three seconds to go, sophomore forward Bria Coleman put the finishing touches on the victory with the fourth Roughrider goal of the day. Coleman slipped past the Coyote defense, got fed a perfect ball from freshman midfielder Annalyce Romero and placed her shot up-and-over the Coyote goalkeeper for the score.

After the goal celebration, the Roughriders ran out the clock to secure the victory and move to 1-0 on the young season.
