Hot Start Not Enough For YC Women’s Basketball

2/4/2023 7:14:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College women's basketball team's hot start could not be sustained on Saturday night as it fell to the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Coyotes 69-59 and moved to 7-14 overall this season with a 4-11 conference record.

Already up 11-5 halfway through the first quarter, freshman guard Saydee Allred buried three pointers on consecutive possessions to give the Roughriders a commanding 17-5 lead in the early goings.

Down big, the Coyotes remained relentless and ended the period on a 13-4 run to cut their deficit to just 21-18 at the end of the first.

In the second quarter, Allred knocked down another longball, before Chandler-Gilbert took a 29-26 lead with some hot shooting of their own. Freshman guard Wynter Huskie then stepped up after seeing the big lead evaporate and knocked down a jumper and a three on back-to-back possessions to give YC the lead back at 31-29.

The seesaw battle continued throughout the second with the Coyotes eventually taking a narrow 37-35 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, the big-scoring swings disappeared as things stayed close with freshman forward Kishyah Anderson knocking down a jump shot with just over two minutes to play in the period to tie things up at 49-49.

After being down by two to start the fourth quarter, YC found itself in the same situation with just under two minutes to go in the contest after Hollie Dalton hit a jump shot to bring the score to 61-59 in favor of the Coyotes.

After trimming the deficit to just two, YC saw Chandler-Gilbert go on an 8-0 run to end the game and bring the score to its final of 69-59.

Allred led all YC scorers on the night with 14 while Anderson had 13 and Dalton had 10.
