Three-Point Surge Leads YC Women’s Basketball Past Glendale

2/25/2023 8:08:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College women's basketball team hosted the Glendale Community College Gauchos inside of Walraven Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon and defeated GCC 63-54 for its first sweep of the season. The Roughriders are now 10-16 overall and 7-13 in conference play.

It was a slow start for YC as the Gauchos took an 18-12 lead into the second quarter and added a three pointer to start the period to take a commanding 21-12 lead.

The Roughriders responded to their nine-point deficit with a three-point barrage in the second quarter, hitting seven shots from downtown with four off the fingertips of freshman guard Saydee Allred

Fellow freshman guard Brooklyn Wiltbank knocked down two of the long-distance shots in the second while freshman guard Wynter Huskie knocked down the other and the Roughriders took a 35-28 lead into the break.

After halftime, it was more of the same from YC as Wiltbank knocked down two more threes to power the Roughriders to a 49-33 lead at the halfway point of the third quarter.

Looking to cruise to a victory, the Roughriders quickly learned that the Gauchos were intent on making sure that no such thing happened as they turned the tables with a 19-4 run to cut the deficit to just 53-52 with just over five minutes left to play in the fourth quarter.

The Roughriders showed no panic after seeing their lead dwindle and outscored GCC 10-2 to close out the contest and clinch the 63-54 victory. Overall, the Roughriders knocked down 12 threes in Saturday's contest, after hitting 11 in their last game (an 81-57 victory over South Mountain).

Allred wound up leading all YC scorers with 17 points while Wiltbank finished with 16.
