Myers’ 25 Points Not Enough Against AWC

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College men's basketball team fell to the Arizona Western College Matadors inside Walraven Gymnasium for the second-consecutive day on Saturday afternoon with the final score being 70-59.

On the season, YC is now 7-7 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

It was a tough start for the Roughriders as the Matadors took a commanding 20-9 lead 11 minutes into the contest.

Needing a spark, freshman guard Nadir Myers provided just that with some stellar play throughout the rest of the afternoon.

With nine minutes left in the first half, Myers scored 12 points, his last being a free throw that completed a three-point play after hitting a floater to bring the Roughriders within four points at 34-30 with two minutes left to play.

Sophomore guard Carter John collected the last bucket of the first half after Myers' brilliance, a three-pointer that sent YC into the locker room trailing just 34-33 after being down by double digits just 10 minutes earlier.

After the break, YC and AWC went back-and-forth for most of the second half with YC taking a brief lead of 48-47 with 10 to play after Myers knocked down his third of four three-pointers on the afternoon.

After Myers' shot from long distance, AWC went on a 13-2 run to take a 60-50 lead with less than five minutes left to go to regain its lost lead from the first half.

YC, once more, never gave up and chipped away at the Matador lead, cutting it down to three after a basket from John with 55 seconds on the clock brought the score to 62-59 in favor of the Matadors.

Unfortunately, AWC was able to close out the contest with an 8-0 run and walked away with a 70-59 victory.

Myers led all YC scorers on the night with 25 points.
