Women’s Basketball Falls To South Mountain In Double Overtime

1/14/2023 8:53:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Roughriders and South Mountain Community College Cougars played a wild one on Saturday night inside of Walraven Gymnasium with the Roughriders falling 71-69 in double overtime. With its fourth-straight loss, YC falls to 6-9 overall this season and 3-6 in conference play.

After a slow first quarter in which South Mountain led 15-8, the Roughriders took off in the second quarter.

Freshman guards Saydee Allred and Hollie Dalton brought YC back to life with three pointers on three-consecutive possessions (Allred, Dalton, Allred) and turned an 18-10 deficit into just a 21-19 deficit.

From there, the Roughriders took the lead and took a 30-25 lead into the locker room at the break after outscoring South Mountain 22-10 in the second quarter.

After halftime, the Roughriders scored just six points in the third quarter and headed into the fourth quarter trailing 39-36.

In the fourth, the Roughriders and Cougars went back and forth and went into the final minute tied at 52-52. On YC's next possession, Dalton continued her stellar game with a go-ahead layup with 40 seconds left on the clock.

South Mountain, however, tied the game on their next possession and the teams headed to overtime, tied at 54-54.

Despite taking a five-point lead to start the first overtime, the Roughriders saw the Cougars tie things up at 59-59. Freshman center Jaiden Renne and freshman guard Brooklyn Wiltbank both scored with under a minute to go, however, to give the Roughriders a narrow 63-60 lead.

Like regulation, however, South Mountain rallied and nailed a three pointer to send the game into double overtime.

This time, South Mountain took a lead to start the extra period and never surrendered its lead to take home the 71-69 victory.

Dalton led all YC scorers with 20 while Wiltbank had 13 and Allred had 11. Freshman forward Kishyah Anderson also reached double digits with 14 points of her own.
