No. 6 Mesa Drops YC Women’s Basketball

1/11/2023 11:10:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The No. 6-ranked Mesa Community College Thunderbirds traveled up to Prescott on Wednesday night to face the Yavapai College women's basketball team and eventually emerged victorious with a final score of 52-45. The loss is YC's third in a row and brings its overall record to 6-8 and conference record to 3-5.

After a sloppy first quarter, the Roughriders trailed just 11-9 and began to grab some momentum in the early goings of the second quarter.

Freshman forward Kishyah Anderson tied things up at 11-11 after hitting a floater on the first possession of the second and a minute later, fellow freshman forward Tera Smith swished a long-range three to give YC a 14-11 lead.

Anderson would later bury a three to give YC a 20-17 lead, propelling the Roughriders to a narrow 24-23 lead at the halfway point of Wednesday night's contest.

The third quarter was all YC as a jumper from freshman guard Hollie Dalton pushed the Roughrider lead to 36-30 with two minutes left to play in the quarter.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Roughriders led 36-33 and threatened to run away with the game after getting some elite play from freshman guard Brooklyn Wiltbank

Wiltbank, already in double digits on the night, scored three straight YC baskets in four possessions to give YC a 42-37 lead. After Wiltbank's heroics, Anderson drove to the hoop and scored and elevated the lead to 44-37 with just over five minutes to play.

Unfortunately for YC, the Thunderbirds scored the next 10 points of the contest and were able to steal the victory with a 52-45 final.

Wiltbank led the scoring charge with 16 on the night while Anderson checked in with 14.
