Baseball Bested By Cochise

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College baseball team fell to the Cochise College Apaches twice on Saturday afternoon at Roughrider Park, losing game one 6-4 and losing game two 13-8. The losses moved the Roughriders' overall record to 31-14-1 and conference record to 19-11. 

Game One
Yavapai fell into a 6-1 hole in game one, before pushing three runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to just 6-4. YC, however, was held off the scoreboard in the sixth and seventh innings. 

Freshman lefty Nick Woodcock tallied two innings of scoreless relief in game one to go along with four strikeouts. 

At the plate, sophomore utility man JT Taylor led the way with three hits (one double) while redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sean Rimmer had two. 

Sophomore infielder Travis Warinner, sophomore utility man Jo Stevens, redshirt-sophomore outfielder Amari Bartee (double), freshman infielder Alex Ulloa (homer), sophomore catcher Alton Gyselman and sophomore infielder Kade York all finished with one hit apiece. 

Game Two
The Roughriders trailed big in game two as the Apaches took a commanding 12-2 lead in the fifth, before watching the Roughriders score twice in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Cochise, however, pushed an insurance run across in the top of the ninth and held the Roughriders scoreless in the bottom half to clinch the sweep and secure the 13-8 victory. 

Sophomore righty Ben Staiger tallied 2.1 innings of scoreless relief in the contest while striking out two. Sophomore rightys Jace Taylor and Ethan Bell also pitched scoreless innings with two strikeouts apiece. 

At the plate, freshman infielder Rocco Gump led the way with three hits (two doubles) while Stevens (one homer) had two. Warinner (double), Taylor, Rimmer, freshman utility man Ben Zeigler, freshman outfielder Jude Hall (double), Ulloa (double) and freshman catcher Cade Westerlund all had one hit in game two.

The Roughriders are back on the diamond on Tuesday, April 19, in Yuma, Arizona, where they will face the No. 10-ranked Arizona Western College Matadors. First pitch for the doubleheader is set for noon.
