Pitching Powers YC Baseball To Sweep Of Glendale

3/31/2022 10:38:00 PM

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Yavapai College baseball pitching staff surrendered just two runs and 10 hits to the Glendale Community College Gauchos in the team's doubleheader sweep on Thursday afternoon, winning 7-2 in game one and 6-0 in game two. The pair of road wins moves the team to 24-11-1 overall and 14-8 within the ACCAC.

Game One
Sophomore righty Nate Ward earned his fourth-consecutive victory in game one with a complete-game seven-inning performance that featured six strikeouts, five hits allowed and two runs allowed.

The Gauchos struck first with two runs in the first inning (their only runs of the day as they went 15 innings without scoring the rest of the afternoon), however, Ward settled in and gave the Roughrider bats plenty of time to get the offense going.

In the top of the fourth, sophomore utility man Jo Stevens drove in the first YC run of the day with an RBI double to cut the deficit to 2-1. Later in the inning, sophomore infielder Kade York gave YC the lead with a two-out two-run single to center.

Up 3-2, the Roughriders added an insurance run in the top of the fifth on an RBI double off the bat of freshman infielder Ethan Thomas and added another insurance run in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore infielder Travis Warinner

In the top of the seventh, redshirt-sophomore outfielder Amari Bartee launched a no-doubt two-run homer to left to push the Roughrider lead (and eventual final score) to 7-2.

At the plate, Warinner, Bartee, York and freshman utility man Ben Zeigler all finished with two hits while redshirt-sophomore outfielder Sean Rimmer, Ethan Thomas and Stevens all finished with one.

Game Two
Freshman righty Jackson Thomas continued the theme of dominant pitching in game two as he got the start on the mound, pitched seven scoreless innings, scattered five hits and struck out four Gauchos.

Sophomore rightys Ethan Bell and Ben Staiger each pitched scoreless frames after Thomas, respectively, to complete the shutout.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Roughriders scored a run on a double steal and another run on a Glendale error.

Up 2-0, the Roughriders broke through with a four-spot in the top of the seventh which featured a Warinner sacrifice fly, Zeigler two-run single and RBI single off the bat of freshman infielder Rocco Gump

The aforementioned bullpen secured the 6-0 win with two scoreless frames.

At the plate, Zeigler led the way with two hits while Warinner, sophomore utility man JT Taylor, Gump and freshman catcher Cade Westerlund all had one.
