Women’s Basketball Falls In Season Opener

11/3/2022 6:49:00 PM

Box Score TWIN FALLS, Idaho – The Yavapai College women's basketball team played its first game in over a decade on Thursday night against the No. 10-ranked College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles, the host school of the Hilex Poly/Physician's Immediate Care Tourney.

CSI built a big lead early in the game and eventually cruised to a 69-46 win, dropping the Roughriders in their season opener.

After falling behind 19-0 to start things off, freshman forward Kishyah Anderson hit a jumpshot for the first YC basket of the season to jumpstart a nice second quarter for the Roughriders.

Fellow freshman forward Tera Smith followed Anderson's effort with a three-ball and a couple of free throws to cut the deficit to just 22-10. Despite the Golden Eagles hitting back-to-back threes late in the first half, the Roughriders kept pace thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from freshman guard Keyla Cervantes

Anderson then tallied the last basket of the half on a fast break to cut the deficit to 31-20 as the Roughriders outscored the Golden Eagles 20-14 in the second quarter.

After the break, Cervantes hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 31-22, however, that was as close as YC would get as CSI went on an 8-0 run to balloon its advantage to 39-22 and take control of the contest.

The 17-point lead paved the way for the Golden Eagles as they went into the third quarter with a 51-32 lead and finished the game with the aforementioned 69-46 final score.

For the Roughriders, Cervantes led the team in scoring with 17 points while Smith had 13 and Anderson had nine. Cervantes also added 11 rebounds while Anderson had nine as well.
