PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- After 25 days away from Walraven Gymnasium, the Yavapai College volleyball team made its return in grand fashion, sweeping the Phoenix College Bears in three sets to move to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in the ACCAC.
"I am happy that our players are implementing the things that we are working on in practice on game day," Head Coach Zach Shaver said after the win. "I am excited to see what we can do in the next few weeks."
The Roughriders came out firing in set one as Phoenix College had no answer for Yavapai's attack all night long. Up 20-11, the Roughriders coasted to a 25-19 victory to go up 1-0 in the match.
Set two looked to be a blowout after Yavapai went on a 7-0 run to go up 9-2 and eventually 13-6. The Bears, however, fought back and threatened to take the set.
Down 23-22, the Roughriders fought off a would-be ace that hit the net and gently fell to their side to tie the match at 23 all. Down 24-23, Yavapai registered a big kill followed by an ace to take a 25-24 lead, eventually winning 27-25 and taking a 2-0 lead.
Set three saw the Roughriders register some ferocious kills as Phoenix College, unable to handle the velocity, saw several of its dig attempts hit the gymnasium ceiling. And once Yavapai started blocking everything at the net, it cruised to a 25-17 victory to cap off the sweep.
