Volleyball Victorious on Sophomore Night

10/29/2021 10:53:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- On a night in which it celebrated its nine sophomores, the Yavapai College volleyball team defeated the Arizona Western College Matadors in four sets. With the victory, the Roughriders finish the regular season with a 14-12 overall record and 8-5 record in the ACCAC.

The win also gave Yavapai the regular-season series victory over Arizona Western as it has taken two-of-three this season from the Matadors with Friday night's match being the first matchup to not go to five sets.

Sophomores Natalie Sanchez, Natalie Horsley, Paiten Langston, Samantha Holman, Brooklyn Holland, Keyaira Gravitt, Shea Marovich, Naomi Glasker and Savannah McEwan were all given a round of applause before the match and honored after the match at the sophomore celebration on campus.

On the court, the Roughriders and Matadors were tied 12-12 in set one, before the Roughriders went on a run and pulled away. Freshman outside hitter Sophia Parlanti tallied a kill to bring the score to 21-15 in favor of Yavapai and saw Gravitt finish the set off with a kill for a 25-18 victory.

Yavapai came out on fire in set two, building an 8-0 and eventually 12-3 lead on some big kills from freshman outside hitter Kierslynn Wright and McEwan and tremendous blocking from Langston.

Up 17-7, Langston tallied a kill before watching Wright notch two kills in a row to balloon the advantage to 20-7. Langston continued her dominance up front and blocked back-to-back kill attempts from the Matadors for points as the Roughriders ran away with the set-two victory with a 25-13 final.

Up 2-0 in the match and tied 14-14 in set three, the Roughriders saw Arizona Western tally seven-consecutive points for a commanding 21-14 lead. Yavapai was unable to recover from the rally and dropped the set to the Matadors with a 25-17 score.

Set four saw the Roughriders build a huge advantage as the combination of kills from Wright, Parlanti, Gravitt and Langston couldn't be handled by the Matadors. Up 18-9 at one point, Yavapai cruised to a 25-21 victory with Langston securing the match winning kill.
