Riders Pitchers Combine for One Hitter in Victory

YC Baseball defeats Thompson Rivers 6-1

PRESCOTT, Ariz. (February 26, 2026)

The Yavapai Baseball team was able to take down the Wolfpack of Thompson Rivers in yesterday's "Lunch Break Special" noon game.

The Roughriders won 6-1, which included five Yavapai pitchers combining for just one total hit, as well as 3 hits from Sophomore Matthew Peterson!

All three of Peterson's hits resulted in extra base hits, including 2 doubles and one 2-run Home Run. Tarrell Reid and Aukai Araujo-Waiau both hit one-run homers in back-to-back at bats in the first inning. Araujo-Waiau's second hit of the day came off a double, and the other Roughriders to hit extra base hits include Dongjae Ko, Derek Kiepke, and Owen Fernandes. Peterson was able to steal a base on top of all of his hits.

As great as the hitting was for the Roughriders, the pitching and fielding proved to be the story of the day. Winning pitcher Carter Brown gave up the single hit of the day, but was able to strikeout one opponent batter. The other four pitchers gave up zero hits, and Owen Weeks came in to give the Riders three K's, while Carson Sanchez and Paul Fernow each had 2. Joseph Talas came in during the top of the 9th and struck out one.

The Roughrider fielding was excellent, as Matthew Peterson as first baseman had 10 total putouts and contributed to one of three Yavapai Double Plays. The other double plays came from Paul Fernow and Tarrell Reid. Reid had five fielding assists as well, while Dalton Irwin had 3. Both Carter Brown and Derek Kiepke caught runners stealing.

The Yavapai Baseball team is now 6-3 on the season with this 6-1 win, and the Roughriders look to this weekend to begin their ACCAC conference play!
