No. 10 Mesa Defeats YC Men’s Soccer

9/23/2023 11:22:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – The Yavapai College men's soccer team fell to the No. 10-ranked Mesa Community College Thunderbirds 3-2 on Saturday night at Ken Lindley Field to drop to 5-3 overall on the season and 4-2 in conference play.

With under two minutes left in the first half, freshman forward Luis Medina showed off some nice, shifty moves to elude the Mesa goalkeeper and pass the ball off to freshman midfielder Anthony Khananisho who touched the ball to the back of the Mesa net for a 1-0 YC lead.

The goal was Khananisho's third goal of the season (he has scored in three-consecutive games) while Medina collected his second assist of the season.

After going into halftime with a 1-0 lead, the Roughriders saw the lead evaporate as Mesa scored just seven minutes into the second half to knot things up at 1-1.

Just 40 seconds after the game-tying score, freshman midfielder Carlos Rodriguez played a ball on to freshman forward Jorge Quintero (who had a stellar night with a plethora of almost highlight-reel plays) who scored on a perfect shot to immediately give YC the lead back with a 2-1 score.

The goal was Quintero's team leading seventh of the season while Rodriguez collected his first assist of the season.

After taking the lead back, YC was unfortunately held off the scoreboard for the remainder of the contest while the Thunderbirds were able to find the equalizer and go-ahead score and walked away from Ken Lindley Field with a 3-2 victory.
