Women’s Soccer Tallies Program Record 17 Goals In Lopsided Win

9/16/2023 11:12:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – It was apparent from the first whistle on Saturday afternoon at Ken Lindley Field that the Yavapai College women's soccer team was going to have a special day. Moving up and down the field with ease, the Roughriders did just that as they defeated the Paradise Valley Community College Cougars 17-0, setting the program's record for goals scored in a game.

"It was a great team effort in getting goals from 10 different players, including six players that weren't in our starting lineup," Head Coach Rozie DeWeese said after the win. "We did a good job of staying focused and working on the areas that we need to continue to improve on."

The record-setting win topples last year's 12-0 win over South Mountain and also pushes the Roughriders win streak to three games, overall record to 5-4 and conference record to 3-1.

The Roughriders reached the 17-goal mark with nine in the first half and eight in the second half. Five players scored multiple goals including two hat tricks.

Sophomore forward Julie Reyes scored the game's first goal of the day five minutes into the contest and completed her hat trick with the 11th and 14th goals of the afternoon to push her season total to a team-leading eight goals.

Freshman forward Gabbie Antonini notched the other hat trick on the afternoon with the seventh and eighth goals (one minute apart) and finished the hat trick with the team's 12th goal in the second half. The trio of goals were Antonini's first three of the season.

Freshman forwards Paola Carrillo and Emma Young and sophomore forward Bria Coleman all notched two goals apiece giving Carrillo and Coleman three apiece on the season while Young now has four.

To round out the scoring, freshman defender Ava Manwill, freshman forward Megan Townsend, sophomore midfielder Cami Prieto, freshman forward Jayla Colbert and freshman forward Victoria Taylor each found the back of the net on Saturday.

For Taylor and Townsend, it was their first goals of the season while Colbert scored her third and Manwill and Prieto each notched their second.
