Women’s Soccer Battles Arizona Western in 4-2 Loss

10/3/2023 11:24:00 PM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – It was an exciting match on Tuesday afternoon at Ken Lindley Field as the Yavapai College women's soccer team celebrated its sophomores before hosting the Arizona Western College Matadors. Unfortunately for YC, its unbeaten streak was snapped as the Matadors left town with a 4-2 victory.

On the season, YC is now 8-5-1 overall with a 6-2-1 conference record.

After some chances from both teams, AWC took control of the contest in the 19th minute, scoring a pair of goals 45 seconds apart from each other to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Unbothered by the deficit, YC responded with poise and aggression in the offensive zone and it paid off just before the first-half water break.

Sophomore forward Julie Reyes received the ball from the midfield and worked her way past the Matador defense towards the net. After drawing three defenders, Reyes tapped a perfect pass over to fellow sophomore forward Bria Coleman who promptly beat the AWC keeper to cut the Roughrider deficit in half.

Coleman's score was her fourth of the season while Reyes collected her team-leading seventh assist.

After the break, the teams struggled to find scoring chances, however, Arizona Western broke through with 28 minutes left in the match and scored on a header to go up 3-1 and regain its two-goal lead.

Once more, YC showed no quit and cut the deficit to just one five minutes after the AWC goal.

This time, freshman defender Ava Manwill lined up for a free kick just outside the box and, through heavy traffic, arced a shot that rattled off the AWC keeper.

Several defenders tried to clear the ball, however, it found the foot of freshman defender Maddie Antonini who beat the out-of-position AWC keeper with a perfectly-placed shot to the top-left of the net, to the goalkeeper's right, to score her first goal of the season and bring the score to 3-2.

After the second-half water break, YC pushed the ball up the field and had several chances to bring the game to a tie, however, AWC scored with four minutes left in the contest to retake a two-goal lead for the third time and put the match on ice with the eventual 4-2 final.
