Women’s Soccer Defeats Chandler-Gilbert

9/17/2022 10:26:00 PM

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. – The Yavapai College women's soccer team picked up its first home victory on Saturday night after defeating the Chandler-Gilbert Community College Coyotes 2-1 at Mountain Valley Park. The Roughriders now move to 3-4 overall this season and 2-0 in the conference.

In net, freshman goalkeeper Morgan Trail took home the victory with five saves.

The Roughriders dominated the possession for the first 10 minutes of the game, however, broke through on the scoresheet with just under eight and a half to go in the first half.

After a handball gave YC a free kick just outside the box, sophomore forward Hanna Urtado lined up for the shot and sent it off of a Chandler-Gilbert defender and past the keeper to give YC a 1-0 lead. It was Urtado's first goal of the season as well.

With two minutes left in the first half, sophomore forward Emma Alvarez gained possession after an errant clearing attempt from the Coyotes, sidestepped a defender and placed a perfect shot to the upper-right corner of the net to give the Roughriders a 2-0 lead.

After heading into the break with a 2-0 lead, the Roughriders failed to score in the second half, however, they held the Coyotes to just one goal to take home the 2-1 victory.

Alvarez's fifth goal of the season proved to be the game-winner on the night.
