YUMA, Ariz. – The Yavapai College women's soccer team headed south on Thursday night for a matchup against the Arizona Western College Matadors and eventually fell by a score of 3-1 and moved to 1-3 overall on the season.

Arizona Western scored just three minutes into the contest, however, Yavapai was able to keep it to a 1-0 deficit as it headed into halftime.

After the break, the Matadors lined up for a penalty shot with just over 26 minutes remaining in the match, looking to take a 2-0 lead.

Freshman goalkeeper Makenzie Stanton lined up opposite of the AWC attacker, dove to her right and made a spectacular save to preserve the 1-0 game.

Just under 10 minutes after the Stanton save, sophomore forward Emma Alvarez scored her team-leading third goal of the season, a perfectly placed ball from about 20 yards out that hit the upper-right corner of the net, to tie the game at 1-1.

Freshman midfielder Miranda Pena took home the assist on the Alvarez goal.

Tied with 18 minutes left in regulation, the Roughriders unfortunately saw the tie disappear as Arizona Western was able to notch two more goals before the clock expired and took home the 3-1 victory.
