Women’s Soccer Drops Contest to Mesa

9/28/2021 8:25:00 PM

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. -- The Yavapai College women's soccer team fell 2-0 at Mountain Valley Park Tuesday night against the Mesa Community College Thunderbirds in its second ACCAC contest of the year. Overall, the Roughriders are 4-6 and 1-1 in conference play.

The Roughriders came out with a couple of great chances to start the match on a chilly, windy day in Prescott Valley. Freshman forward AJ Jones narrowly missed a score off the goalkeeper's hand and top-right corner post.

After Mesa scored with 12 minutes to go in the half, Yavapai threatened again with just under two minutes to go in the first half. Some precise passing and great ball movement resulted in a great cross pass from freshman forward Dani Mares, however, the Thunderbirds were able to clear and keep a one goal lead.

After halftime, Mesa pushed its advantage to 2-0 with 38 minutes to go in the match on a cross pass that got tipped past the goalkeeper to the back of the net.

With a two-goal lead, the Thunderbirds were able to keep the Roughriders from scoring and won the match with a 2-0 final.
