Volleyball Falls to Two Top Ranked Opponents

9/2/2021 10:21:00 PM

On the opening day of the Dalton Overstreet Invitational the Roughriders played a brutally tough schedule.

They opened with #12 Barton CC and came out playing solid volleyball. Yavapai won the opening set 25-21 but fell in the next 3 sets (22-25, 22-25, 14-25). Too many unforced errors caused Yavapai come away with a 1-3 loss. A bright spot in the offense was freshman outside hitter Kierslynn Wright who led the Roughriders with 16 kills on 42 swings. Sophomore libero Brooklyn Holland anchored the defense with a team high 21 digs. Freshmen Brooke Parker and Kate Allan chipped in 15 digs each. Allan also contributed 9 kills while Parker added 14 assists.

In the nightcap Yavapai welcomed the #6 ranked Florida Southwestern State Buccaneers. Yavapai started set 1 off strong behind a loud and boisterous crowd but eventually dropped the first set 20-25. In set 2 Yavapai could not find their way around the enormous block of FLSW and fell quickly 11-25. Set 3 was a different story. Both teams battled back and forth past 25 points and Yavapai extended the match with a 29-27 victory. The Buccaneers did not want to tae their chance in a 5th set so they finished off the Roughriders 18-25 in the fourth set.

Yavapai's overall record now stands at 3-4. On Friday they will take the court at 11:00 am against Wallace State who was a team playing in the NJCAA National Championship Tournament last season. They will then look for an upset of the #4 ranked Eagles from Utah State University - Eastern at 7:00 pm. Yavapai will wrap up the Dalton Overstreet Invitation on Saturday at 6:00 pm against the #2 ranked team in the country, Snow College.
