8/19/2021 6:36:00 PM

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. -- Every second of soccer was history Thursday afternoon at Mountain Valley Park in Prescott Valley as the Yavapai College women's soccer team defeated the College of Southern Nevada 5-1 in its first game in program history.

"Today was a great win for us," said Head Coach Rozie DeWeese after earning her first win in Yavapai green and gold. "I'm super proud of the energy on the field and from the sidelines from all of our players. I loved the defensive team efforts and the composure that we had in front of the net today."

After some back and forth action with few scoring chances in the first 30 minutes of the game, the Roughriders broke through for the first score of the game.

After a save from the Coyote's goalkeeper, No. 12 Samantha Slaughter stood up, collected the rebound and shot the ball to the back of the net for the first goal in program history with 14:48 to go in the half. No. 7 Ashlynn Jones notched the assist on the play.

After Slaughter's goal, the Roughriders and Coyotes headed to halftime with Yavapai leading 1-0.

After a quiet start to the half, the Roughrider offense exploded for four goals in the second half, three of which came in a span of just six minutes.

With 19 minutes to go in the half, No. 21 Dani Mares scored, giving Yavapai a 2-0 lead, after a Roughrider corner kick with No. 10 Emma Alvarez cashing in on the assist.

The Coyotes then cut the lead in half with a goal just one minute after Mares' score.

Just over two minutes after the Southern Nevada goal, Yavapai scored again with a rocket to the top-right corner of the net off the foot of No. 18 Isabella Merino. Mares took home the assist on the goal.

Two minutes after Merino's goal (with 13:40 to go in the game), Mares notched her second goal of the game with a long score from roughly 30 yards out. Mares's second goal of the game gave her a team-leading five points on the day.

Leading 4-1, Alvarez notched the fifth and final goal of the day for Yavapai with six minutes left on the clock. Alvarez beat the Coyote goalkeeper on a 50/50 ball, spun, corralled the ball and sent it to the back of the net. Jones notched her second assist of the day on the goal.

Overall, the aforementioned Mares finished with five points (two goals and one assist), Alvarez finished with three points (one goal and one assist) and Jones finished with two points (two assists).

In the net, Lauryn Mayhan finished a perfect five-for-five in saves as the Roughriders notched nine shots on goal to the Coyotes five.
