Baseball Concludes Regular Season with Wins

The Roughrider baseball team concluded the regular season Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over the visiting Gila Monsters from Eastern Arizona College, 12-1 and 18-8. Going into the playoffs, YC has a 27-18 and 22-14 in league play. The NJCAA Region I playoffs begins on Thursday, May 6th.
 
After falling behind 1-0, the Riders scored 12 unanswered runs for the shortened run-rule game. CJ Valdez was 3 for 3 with 3 runs batted in. TJ Wheeler, Damone Hale and Daniel Martin each had two hits. Hale, Wheeler and Kade York each stroked home runs. Declan Dutton got the victory on the bump scattering 2 hits and w strikeouts.
 
YC came from behind in the nightcap. Eastern Arizona scored four runs in the top of the first innings but Yavapai responded with six runs in the bottom half of the frame. The Gila Monsters tied the game in the top half of the second inning but the Green and Gold countered that with three runs in the bottom of the inning. YC had two more big innings scoring four runs in the 5th inning and five runs in the 8th inning.
 
Seven Roughrider batters had multiple hits in the game. TJ Wheeler, CJ Valdez and Daniel Martin each had three hits. Wheeler knocked two home runs and Martin had four RBI's and a homer. Amari Bartee hit two home runs and CJ Valdez had a round tripper. Damone Hale, Kade York and Travis Warriner each had two hits. Matt Bachelier got the victory throwing two innings.
 
The Roughriders begin playoff action on Thursday, May 6th. Yavapai is the #5 seed in the Division I race. YC will face the #3 seed Arizona Western College in Tucson. The winner will face the #2 seed Pima Community College on Thursday, May 7th. The winner of the double elimination tournament will advance to the championship series on May 13th, 14th and 15th.

Thursday's game will begin at 3:00 PM on the campus of Pima Community College in Tucson.
