Softball heading to championship game

5/15/2021 6:58:00 PM

The Roughrider softball team moved one game closer to making it a Yavapai College Trifecta with a 14-2 victory over Arizona Western in the NJCAA Region I Division I Tournament at Bill Vallely Field in Prescott, Friday afternoon. The win puts them in the Championship Game on Saturday against the same Arizona Western team.

YC opened up the scoring in the first inning on a solo home run by the reigning ACCAC Player of the Year, Jocelyn Ulrich.  Yavapai scored another single run in the second inning on back to back doubles from Mikaela Payne and Miki Berg. Arizona Western cut the lead in half in the third inning but then the YC hitting barrage began in their half of the third inning with four home runs by Payne, Megan Parsley, Mia Weckel and Bella Porreco. YC put the game out of reach in the fourth inning on home runs from Ulrich (her 2nd the day), Berg, and Parsley (her 2nd of the day). Ulrich was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's. Weckel, Cheyenne Sandoval, Payne, Berg and Parsely each had two hits. Emily Dix got the victory in the game throwing four innings striking out 5.

Yavapai plays for the Region/District Championship and the chance to move to the National Tournament on Saturday facing the Matadors beginning at noon at Bill Vallely Field. If AWC wins that game, that would force another game to determine the champion.
