Roughriders Capture 2021 Division I Region I Championship

5/15/2021 6:56:00 PM

The Yavapai College Men's Soccer team captured the 2021 DI Region I Championship against Arizona Western in an epic battle between two of the top teams in the region at Ken Lindley Field by a 1-0 margin.

In a game that featured two of the highest scoring teams in the conference and region, it was the defending that would be the dominant topic of conversation throughout the night. Neither team was able to create many chances throughout the night as Arizona Western clamped down on YC's front runners and denied the opportunity to get in behind and limited the Riders to one shot on goal in the first half. Yavapai would begin applying pressure frequently in the first 9 minutes of the second half with quick counter attack opportunities. In the 55th minutes Iann Topete would place a perfectly timed through ball to Enrique Zamora, who would settle the ball and bury it into the far post past an outstretched Western goalie, Sato to hit the eventual game winner. Arizona Western would respond with a flurry of chances led by All ACCAC Michelle Signorelli, but the Rider defenders would be up for the task. Hudson Bodily kept the clean sheet for Yavapai College for the evening with 4 saves and a dominant performance in the air.

This is Yavapai College's 79th overall Championship and 23rd Region I Championship since its inception in 1989.

Up next for the Roughriders will be a District Championship opportunity versus the Region 18 Champions in Utah on Saturday May 22nd
