Baseball Splits with Cougars

The Roughrider baseball team split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in Phoenix with South Mountain Community College dropping the first 4-3 and winning the nightcap, 11-7. Yavapai is now 25-18 on the year and 20-14 in the ACCAC. South Mountain has a 29-14 overall record and 23-13 conference mark.
 
The Roughriders struck first in the opener scoring a single run in the opening frame on an RBI single from CJ Caldez. South Mountain knotted the score scoring a lone run in the third inning and scored three more runs in the fifth inning. In their half of the sixth inning YC pulled within one putting two runs on the board in the sixth inning. YC went down in order in the top of the seventh inning to conclude the game.
 
CJ Valdez, TJ Wheeler and Travis Warinner each had two hits.
 
Once again, the Roughriders scored first with a run in the opening inning. South Mountain tied the score with a single run in the fourth inning. Both teams put four runs on the board in the sixth inning and South Mountain took the lead in the seventh inning with two runs but YC scored four runs in the eighth inning and added two more in the ninth to secure the victory.
 
The Roughriders outhit the Cougars 12-8 with six extra base hits. Travis Warriner led the Green and Gold offense going 5 for 6 with four runs knocked in and a home run. CJ Valdez was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI's with a home run. TJ Wheeler was 1 for 3 with a home run.
 
Joseph Silverio got the victory throwing one inning and Nathan Ward got the save.
 
Yavapai concludes the regular season on Saturday, May 1st hosting Eastern Arizona  College. The twin bill begins at 12:00 PM.
