#7 Ranked Soccer Holds Off #10 Matadors

4/22/2021 10:06:00 PM

The #7 (NJCAA Division 1) ranked Yavapai Roughriders held off #10 (NJCAA Division 1) Arizona Western Matadors 2-0 in a gritty match at Ken Lindley Field this evening. In a match of momentum shifts throughout the evening, the Riders were able to capitalize on a hard driven in-swinging freekick by Jonathan Mayen at the 30:42 mark, which was redirected by Arizona Western for the first goal of the match. Both teams would trade back and forth attacking salvos at each other with both defenses holding steady for the duration of the first half. Yavapai would mount pressure on the Arizona Western back line early in the 2nd half with a variety of attacking opportunities against one of the stingiest defenses in the conference. In the 72nd minute, freshman Chris Cornn would find himself into goal 1v1 which was saved by the Matador goalkeeper Atsuki Sato, and followed up by Iann Topete to make the game 2-0. This was Iann Topete's 6th goal of the season for YC.
Hudson Bodily put in another solid performance in goal, organizing a backline that allowed 2 total shots on goal for the visiting Matadors and is now 4-1 for the season.
Up next for the Roughriders will be an 11 AM kickoff at Glendale Community College.
