Playing on the final day of the Great Western Shootout in Yuma, the Roughrider softball team went 2-1 on the day and 4-2 for the weekend. In a rematch from the night before, YC lost the opener to Southern Idaho in nine innings, 3-2. Yavapai bounced back in extreme fashion as the pounded Colorado Northwestern, 25-0 in five innings. In the final game of the day, the Roughriders beat Southern Nevada, 9-6.
After losing to Southern Idaho the night before, 15-1, the Roughriders faced the Eagles 12 hours later in a game that was a pitcher's duel. Yavapai took a 2-0 lead after four innings of play, however Southern Idaho tied the score in the bottom the fifth with two runs. Both teams failed to score in the 8th inning and YC didn't score in their half of the 9th inning. Unfortunately for the Riders, Southern Idaho got the winning run in the bottom of the inning. Emily Dix was the hard luck pitcher throwing all 8 innings striking out 15 batters. The Roughrider offense only managed 6 hits on the game with Alyssa Carpio and Mikaela Payne each going 2 for 4.
In the second game of the day, the Roughrider bats exploded for 16 hits 11 for extra bases including four home runs. Mia Weckel led the way going 4 for 4 with two doubles and five runs batted in. Cheyenne Sandoval was 3 for 4 with two home runs, a double, 5 runs scored and 6 RBI's. Mikaela Payne was 1 for 2 with a home run and four RBI's. Leona Joshua and Elisa Granado each had two hits. Kayla Rodgers had a home run and two runs knocked in. Leona Joshua threw the complete game surrendering 4 hits while striking out 5.
In the final game of the weekend, the Lady Hitters scattered 12 hits. Cheyenne Sandoval led the way getting three hits and scoring two runs. Alyssa Carpio, Jocelyn Ulrich and Kayla Rodgers each had two hits. Ulrich had a home run knocking in two runs. Esperanza Rodriguez had three RBI's on and inside-the-park home run. Cassie Elliott got the victory in the circle throwing 4.1 innings with two strikeouts. Emily Dix threw the final 2.2 innings striking out four to get the save.
Yavapai does not return to the diamond until March 6th when they host Gateway Community College in the ACCAC opener.
