Softball 2-1 in Yuma at Western Shootout

The Roughrider softball team began the season with a 2-1 record Friday in Yuma at Western Shootout. YC beat Snow College, UT in the opening game, 4-3 and then beat Utah State University-Eastern, 6-4 and fell in the nightcap to Southern Idaho, 14-1.

In the opener, the Roughriders broke a 1-1 tie in their half of the fifth inning scoring 3 runs. Snow closed the gap to one with a run in the fifth inning and the sixth. After giving up a single in the bottom of the 7th inning, Kamryn Kamakaiwi got a pop up , a groundout and a ground out to get the save. Emily Dix, the starter, got the victory.
Kamakaiwi was 1 for 3 with two runs batted in. Jocelyn Ulrich was 1 for 2 with a run scored and an RBI.

In the second game, Ulrich was 3 for 4 with a run scored and 2 RBI's with a double and a home run. Esperanza Rodriguez and Alyssa Carpio were each 1 for 4 with a run batted in. Leona Joshua threw a complete game for the victory allowing 3 hits and striking out 3 batters.

In the final game of the day, Rodriguez, Carpio and Ulrich each had 2 hits apiece however the Roughriders could only manage 1 run.
The Southern Idaho hitting pounded 14 hits scoring 10 runs in their half of the fifth to put the game out of touch.
The Roughriders conclude tournament play on Saturday playing College of Southern Idaho again in the day opener, then YC plays Colorado Northwestern and finish the day against Southern Nevada.
