Baseball Split On The Road

2/20/2021 6:58:00 PM

On Saturday afternoon in Phoenix, the Roughrider baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Phoenix College winning the first game 6-4 and dropping the nightcap in extra innings, 5-4. The Roughriders are now 5-4 on the year.

In the opener, YC scored all 6 runs in the fifth inning and shut down a Bear rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory. Phoenix College took a 2-0 lead after four innings of play. However, in the top of the fifth, the Roughrider bats took control of the game highlighted by a pair of home runs by Damone Hale (2) and Cam Jowaiszas (4). The Bears scored a lone run in their half of the fifth to cut the lead in half. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Phoenix used a couple of YC errors to cut the lead to two but Taisei Yahiro got two strikeouts and a groundout to stop the rally and record the victory. Hale and TJ Wheeler each had two hits. Hale had three runs batted in and Jowaiszas knocked in two runs.

In the second game, it came down to the last play, but YC was on the wrong end of the 5-4 defeat. Phoenix College trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the tenth inning but scored two runs on an error and suicide squeeze bunt for the victory. The Riders came from behind scoring two runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Bears tied the game in their half of the inning to send the game into extra innings. YC scored one run in the top of the tenth only to relinquish the game winners in the bottom of the 10th. The Roughriders only managed two hits on the game with Cam Jowaiszas and TJ Wheeler each with a hit.

On Saturday, February 27th, Yavapai begins the ACCAC season by entertaining fellow DI foe South Mountain Community College. The doubleheader will begin at 12:00 PM. Due to Yavapai College Campus and Yavapai County regulations on event size, we are unable to have parents, fans, or general public at games for the spring season. We will be offering online live streaming of games (home and away, if possible) for fan viewing.
