2/10/2021 11:11:00 AM

The Roughrider baseball team dropped a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at the hands of Salt Lake Community College, 3-1 in extra innings and 11-1. YC is now 2-2 on the young season.
The opening game was a pitcher's duel. Each team managed only three hits apiece. The game was tied at 1 going into the 8th inning of the 7-inning game. Salt Lake scored 2 runs in their half of the 8th and held the Riders in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory. Taisei Yahiro started the game throwing four innings of scoreless ball with 4 strikeouts. Tyler Davis threw 1.2 innings and Joseph Silverio took the loss in 2.1 innings of work. Offensively, Lance Kelly, Cam Jowaiszas and Alton Gyselman each had a hit. Ryan Cougill said, "We battled well in the first game against a very good arm. I was happy with our competitiveness."

In the nightcap, YC committed 3 errors and surrendered 10 hits, 6 for extra bases including 5 home runs. Offensively, TJ Wheeler was 2 for 2. Jacob Police, Daniel Martin, Kenneth Jimenez and Lance Kelly each had a hit. Head coach Ryan Cougill commented, "In game 2, I was disappointed with our focus and inability to respond to some adversity. It's early and we haven't developed a personality yet. That comes with practicing and playing consistently." Yavapai returns to the diamond on Tuesday, February 16th for non-conference doubleheader against Gateway Community College in Mesa. The first pitch will be thrown at 12:00 PM.
