Women’s Soccer Drops Narrow Contest To Arizona Western

10/9/2021 6:47:00 PM

YUMA, Ariz. -- The Yavapai College women's soccer team fell 1-0 Saturday night in a close contest with the Arizona Western College Matadors. With the loss, the Roughriders move to 6-8 on the season with a 3-3 mark in ACCAC play.

Neither team was able to score in the first half, thanks in part to an incredible save from freshman goalkeeper Lauryn Mayhan

With 15 minutes left in the first half, Mayhan faced a tough shot, dove to her left and swatted the ball away to keep the contest scoreless.

After the scoreless first half, Mayhan logged another remarkable save just three minutes into the second half. This time, the goalkeeper dove to her right to stop a shot and saw the ball ricochet off the post, before corralling the ball before a rebound attempt could be had.

Midway through the second half, Mayhan continued to save the day for the Roughriders with a nice kick save followed by a diving save several minutes later.

The Matadors, however, continued to find good scoring opportunities and capitalized on a three-on-one rush with just over 15 minutes to play in the match.

Up 1-0, Arizona Western was able to keep Yavapai off the scoresheet to secure a 1-0 victory.
