YUMA, Ariz. -- Seeking a second-consecutive region championship, the Yavapai College men's soccer team fell 2-0 Friday night against the Arizona Western College Matadors in the NJCAA Division I Region I Championship match.

Evenly matched throughout most of the first half, the Matadors broke through with just under six minutes to go, scoring on a penalty kick to take a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Down 1-0, Yavapai saw its best chance to score the equalizer with 40 minutes left to play. After a free kick that found its way into the box, the Roughriders headed the ball back and forth, but couldn't find the back of the net as Arizona Western cleared it out of trouble.

With 14 minutes left to go, the Matadors added some insurance and took a two-goal lead on a well-executed odd-man rush.

After the insurance goal, Arizona Western held Yavapai scoreless to secure the win and clinch the region title with a still-perfect 18-0 record.

For the Roughriders, they finish the season with an 8-8-1 overall record.
