PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- On a chilly, fall Saturday night at Ken Lindley Field, the Yavapai College men's soccer team shutout the Scottsdale Community College Artichokes, winning its final regular season match with a 1-0 score. With the win, the Roughriders finish the regular season with an 8-7-1 record and 4-4-1 ACCAC record.
Sophomore goalkeeper Hudson Bodily took home the shutout and was stellar all night long.
With 25 minutes left to play in the first half, Bodily faced a close-range, high-velocity shot which he caught with ease. Eight minutes later, the Roughriders almost took the lead after a cross pass from sophomore forward Christopher Cornn almost bounced in off of a Scottsdale defender.
After Cornn's chance, with nine minutes left in the first half, freshman forward Jose Vega almost scored and took home the first goal of the match after breaking away from a couple of defenders and shooting a rocket that was just to the right of the Artichoke net.
The teams went into halftime tied 0-0 and after the break, both goalkeepers traded remarkable saves.
Just a minute and a half into the second half, the Scottsdale defense gave up a huge turnover that found the foot of freshman forward Ivan Corral. Corral's point blank shot was headed straight for the back of the net, however, the Artichoke goalkeeper dove to his left and batted it out of the air to preserve the tie.
10 minutes later, Bodily faced a Scottsdale rush and had to climb the ladder to corral a shot that was headed for the top-right part of the net.
After the Bodily save, Scottsdale's goalkeeper continued to keep his team in the match, this time stopping a redirect attempt from freshman forward Mael Lopes with 32 minutes left in the match.
After several scoring chances went by the wayside, the Roughriders found themselves still in a scoreless game with under three minutes to play and the Artichokes lining up for a long free kick.
The play that followed was seemingly thematic of Yavapai's play all night long.
Bodily saw the free kick was going to be short and snatched it out of the air. With no hesitation and in one athletic motion, Bodily heaved the ball well past midfield (with the arm of a quarterback) and saw Vega beat a couple of Scottsdale defenders, corral the ball and pass it to Cornn who was streaking down the field with no defenders in front of him.
Cornn received Vega's pass and sent it past the approaching Scottsdale goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give the Roughriders a 1-0 lead with 2:25 remaining in the match.
Yavapai held Scottsdale scoreless the rest of the way and Cornn's four score of the year proved to be the game-winner with Vega taking home his second assist of the year.
