Men’s Soccer Falls 2-1 Against No. 1 Pima

10/13/2021 12:59:00 AM

PRESCOTT, Ariz. -- Tuesday's cold, fall night featured an epic battle between the Yavapai College Roughriders and the No. 1-ranked (NJCAA Division II) and undefeated Pima Community College Aztecs at Ken Lindley Field.

Unfortunately for Yavapai, the Aztecs emerged victorious in the match with a 2-1 final score. On the season, the Roughriders are now 5-6-1 overall and 1-3-1 in ACCAC play.

Up and down the field the teams went, countering each other with scoring opportunity after scoring opportunity. The Aztecs eventually struck first in the game with just under 20 minutes to play in the first half on a nice play in which the Pima forward weaved through a few defenders before firing a shot to the back of the net.

Down 1-0 after halftime, the Roughriders searched for a comeback and found one with just under 20 minutes to go in the match.

After a corner kick, the Roughriders moved the ball around in their offensive zone and eventually got the ball to freshman forward Jesse Maldonado. The freshman then did what he's done so many times this season: made defenders look silly.

After some nifty moves and penetration of the defense, Maldonado passed the ball to sophomore defender Ivan Harris who deposited the ball to the top-right corner of the net for his first score of the season while tying the match at 1-1.

After Harris's goal, the battle continued with the Roughriders almost scoring on a rush with less than 10 seconds to go in regulation.

The match, however, advanced into single overtime and eventually double overtime where Pima scored the game-winner.
