The Roughrider softball team beat Pima Community College in the opening game of a conference doubleheader and was leading 5-3 in the second game before it was stopped due to darkness. The remainder of the game will be played when the Aztecs visit Prescott on March 21
st. Yavapai improves their record to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in ACCAC action. Pima falls to 0-1 in conference and overall.
In the opener, Yavapai fell behind early when Pima scored a lone run in the second inning. The Roughriders answered in the top of the third inning with 3 runs fueled by a two-run double by
Alyssa Carpio. YC pushed one run across in the in the fourth inning, sixth inning and seventh inning. Pima scored one run in their half of the seventh for the final score of the game. The game was delayed 45 minutes for a medical emergency.
Jackie Traughber threw the complete game surrendering 6 hits and striking out 4 batters.
Kamryn Kamakaiwi and
Alexis Garayzar were two for two. Garayzar had two runs batted in. Carpio was 1 for 1 with 2 RBI's.
In the second game, YC struck first on a two-run home run by Garayzar in the second inning. Pima cut that deficit in half with a single run in their half of the second inning. YC scored again in the fourth inning but Pima scored two runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. The Roughriders took the lead in their half of the seventh on a two-run home run by
Alexus Garza. The game was called due to darkness after the home run and will be finished in March.
The Riders have their home opener on Tuesday, February 11
th against Mesa Community College, weather permitting. The games are scheduled to begin at 12:00 PM at Bill Vallely Field.
