Softball Earns 2 Wins in Las Vegas

he Roughrider softball team was 2 and 1 on the first day of the College of Southern Nevada Kick-Off Classic Friday in Henderson. YC is now 6-1 on the young season.

In the opening game, Yavapai outlasted Trinidad State College, snagging a late lead. The game was tied at seven with YC batting in the top of the sixth when Megan Parsley singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run. The Roughriders knotted the game up at seven in the top of the fifth inning, when Helenihi homered on a 3-1 count, scoring three runs.
 
Sanoe Helenihi led the Rider bats to victory by driving in five runs. She went 3-for-5 at the plate. Helenihi drove in runs on a double in the third, a home run in the fifth, and a single in the sixth.
 
Jackie Traughber got the win for the Roughriders. She allowed two hits and two runs over three innings, striking out five. Cassie Elliott threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
 
YC socked two home runs on the day. Alyssa Carpio put one out in the seventh inning. Helenihi went for the long ball in the fifth inning.
 
Yavapai College Roughriders Varsity totaled 16 hits in the game. Helenihi, Esperanza Rodriguez, Kamryn Kamakaiwi, Parsley, Shaylee Alani, and Carpio each managed multiple hits for Yavapai College Roughriders Varsity. Rodriguez and Helenihi all had three hits to lead Yavapai College Roughriders Varsity.
 
In the second game, the Green and Gold fell behind early and couldn't come back in an 18-1 loss to the Jones College Bobcats on Friday.
 
Jones college Bobcats Varsity got things started in the first inning. Jones college Bobcats Varsity scored three runs when Kayla Collins homered.
 
Shaylee Alani went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Roughriders in hits.
 
In the nightcap, Yavapai got out to a seven-run lead in the fourth inning and held on for the 11-10 victory over Salt Lake Community College.
 
There was plenty of action on the basepaths as YC collected 16 hits and Salt Lake had 15.
 
The Riders got things moving in the first inning, when Alexus Garza doubled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run.
 
Kamryn Kamakaiwi was credited with the victory for the Riders. She lasted two and a third innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out two and walking zero.
 
The Rider offense hit one home run on the day. Alexis Garayzar had a long ball in the second inning.
Shaylee Alani, Garza, Kamakaiwi, Garayzar, Megan Parsley, and Mia Weckel each racked up multiple hits for Yavapai College Roughriders Varsity. Garza and Alani each managed three hits to lead Yavapai College Roughriders Varsity.
 

Yavapai continues tourney play on Saturday facing Utah State-Eastern, College of Southern Idaho and Snow College. YC begins conference play on Tuesday, February 4th at conference nemesis Pima Community College.
