Volleyball Starts Conference Play with a 3-0 Sweep of Pima

The Roughrider volleyball squad opened conference play on Wednesday night with a sweep of the Aztecs from Pima CC. The final scores were 25-20, 25-18, 25-7. Pima started the 500match aggressively and took the lead until about midway through set 1. Yavapai started to settle into a rhythm and took control late in set 1 with some quality serving from freshman libero Heather Wanninger. In the 2nd set Yavapai continued to better themselves starting with consistent serve receive passing. They team took a 2-0 lead into the intermission with a 7 point win. During the intermission both teams and the fans honored police officers from Prescott P.D, Yavapai Tribal P.D., and Yavapai college P. D. in honor of 9/11. (see picture above) After the emotional break in the action Yavapai jumped all over Pima in the 3rd set with a quick side out fro the 1st point. Then sophomore Annie Harte (pictured below) went back the service line and helped the Roughriders build a commanding lead with a 15 point run. From that point on Yavapai did not let off the gas as they finished the 3rd and final set winning by 18 points.

The offense was led by freshman outside hitter Kennedy Wright with 15 kills while hitting .355. Second was sophomore middle blocker Lacie Tenney (pictured below)with 9 kills while hitting .300. Tenney also chipped in 4 block assists and 2 service aces. Sophomore setter Pilar Daugherty distributed the offense and gathered 27 assists. 

The net defense was led by freshman middle blocker Tori Baer who totaled 5 block assists. The backcourt defense was led by libero Heather Wanninger who was the only Roughrider with double digit digs (19). (pictured at right)

Yavapai will return to action on Wednesday September 18th as the welcome the Cougars of South Mountain CC to Prescott for a 7:00 pm first serve. The Roughriders will be looking for their 2nd conference win and 10th overall win.
