On day 1 of the Dalton Overstreet Invitational the Yavapai College Roughriders faced 2 national ranked opponents in Monroe College (#15) and Snow College (#11). In the first match Yavapai opened u

p a 2 sets to 0 lead over the Mustangs winning both sets 25-18. Monroe would not go quietly and started to score more in the third set in which they came away with a 2 point victory (23-25). In the fourth set Monroe kept nthe pressure on but the Roughriders opened up a lead down the stretch and won the final set 25-19. This gave Yavapai their 5th straight win of the season.
Sophomore
Annie Harte led the offense with 13 kills while hitting .367. Two more Roughriders tallied double digit kills; freshman Kenndy Wright with 12 and sophomore
Lacie Tenney with 10. Freshman
Heather Wanninger led the backcourt defense with 19 digs. Sophomore setter
Pilar Daugherty recorded her 1,000th career assists in the first set and was presented with the game ball (pictured right) after the victory. She finished the match with 40 assists.
In the nightcap the Roughriders went to war with the Badgers of Snow College who also entered the match with a 5-0 record. Even though Yavapai dropped all 3 sets they had chances to extend the match especially in set 2 when they tied the game late after coming back from 6 points down. The final scores were 21-25, 27-29, 19-25.
Yavapai will return to the court at 3:00 pm on Friday to take on the Coyotes of Southern Nevada in day 2 action of the Dalton Overstreet Invitational. For a complete tournament schedule see the following link.
